Playground Area

Shaded play space — kid-safe, edible where possible, no toxic or thorny plants

Goals

Things NOT to plant near a play area

Foxglove (Digitalis), oleander (Nerium), datura, hellebore, lily of the valley, monkshood, yew, castor bean, daffodil bulbs, daphne, rhubarb leaves. All toxic if ingested. Also keep berberis, pyracantha, roses, and any thorned bramble away from this zone — kid-eye-height spines are an emergency-room hazard.

Plant palette

PlantWhy it fits
Alpine strawberry (Fragaria vesca 'Mignonette')Edible groundcover. Tiny intense strawberries kids can pick straight off the plant. Tolerates shade better than commercial strawberries.
Wild strawberry (Fragaria chiloensis)California native runner-spreading groundcover. Glossy leaves, white flowers, edible berries.
Chamomile (Matricaria recutita)Soft cushion of feathery foliage with apple-scented daisy flowers. Edible. Calming. The classic "kid plant."
Sweet violet (Viola odorata)Edible scented flowers in early spring. Low spreading groundcover for shade.
Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis)Brush-and-smell lemon scent. Leaves are edible/tea. Soft texture. Confine in a sunk pot — it spreads.
Apple mint (Mentha suaveolens)Soft fuzzy leaves, apple-scented. Edible. The friendliest mint to handle. Confine in a sunk pot.
Heuchera (coral bells)Wide range of foliage colors (lime, plum, peach, silver). Safe. Bell flowers on tall stems for hummingbirds.
HostasBig leaves kids love to touch. Some cultivars get massive — pick a small variety like 'Mouse Ears' if space is tight.
Native sword fern (Polystichum munitum)Evergreen California native fern. Safe, tactile fronds. Anchors the bed visually.
Wild ginger (Asarum caudatum)Glossy heart-shaped native groundcover. Safe to handle, faint ginger smell.
Red currant (Ribes rubrum)Thornless shade-tolerant berry shrub (3–4 ft). Tart red berries kids can pick. Heavy mid-summer crop.
Evergreen huckleberry (Vaccinium ovatum)Slow native shade-tolerant shrub. Small edible blue berries late summer. Pretty year-round.
